Now, if the Mayan prediction of the end of time comes on December 21st this year, those election hopes won't matter. But with no clear sign of an approaching doom's day, the Mexican Tourism Ministry is planning to launch an ambitious tourist drive that is expected to generate billions of dollars for the ancient Mesoamerican region.

Mexican Tourism Minister Gloria Guevara announced on Thursday the formation of a Mayan tourist trail that will connect 70 archaeological sites in southern Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

Guevara said Mexico will invest nearly 8 million US dollars to promote Mayan sites in various Mexican states, with the objective of attracting some 52 million tourists and generating billions of dollars for the country.

Organizers behind the campaign hope that the renewed interest in Mayan culture from their alleged 2012 prophecy of the world’s end will see the ancient Mesoamerican civilization rival Greece and Egypt as a global tourist drawing card.

Called "Mayan World", the official tourist trail will traverse dozens of mystical archaeological zones and coincides with improvements in infrastructure and transport to better connect the once-isolated region.

A favorite site among history buffs, the Maya built soaring temples and elaborate palaces in Central America and southern Mexico, and dominated the region for some 2,000 years, before mysteriously abandoning their cities around 900 AD.
